INTRA-MURAL PROJECTS

A QUICK MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION EARLY DETECTION KIT

PI: Dr. Balanehru Subramanian
Funding agency: Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, 2014
Amount: Rs. 4.32 lakhs
Status: Ongoing
Expected Outcome: To develop a salivary diagnostic kit for early detection of myocardial infarction.

EVALUATION OF ANTI-OXIDANT AND ANTI-INFLAMMATORY (IN VIVO) ACTIVITY OF SEA WEED (MARINE ALGAE) EXTRACTS

PI: Dr. Mangaiyarkarasi Ravirajan
Funding agency: Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, 2017
Amount: Rs. 2.50 lakhs
Status: Ongoing
Expected Outcome: Seaweeds (Marine macroalgae) have shown to exhibit a wide range of therapeutic properties, including anti-cancer, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-diabetic activities. This project may identify promising marine algal bioactive compounds for anti- inflammatory and antioxidant activity.

TO VALIDATE IN VITRO EFFECT OF TERMINALIA ARJUNA (ROXB.EX.DC) WIGHT &ARN. IN VIVO IN OSTEOPOROSIS IN ANIMAL

PI: Dr. Veni S
Funding agency: Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, 2016
Amount: Rs. 2.90 lakhs
Status: Ongoing
Expected Outcome: The studied in vitro osteogenic potential of Terminalia arjuna would further be ascertained in vivo using mice-models.

TO STUDY THE INTERPLAY OF PRO-INFLAMMATORY CYTOKINES AND CHEMOKINES ASSOCIATED WITH INNATE IMMUNE SYSTEM WITH CONCOMITANT MICRO RNA EXPRESSION PROFILE FROM ADIPOCYTES AND MACROPHAGES USING CELL LINES UNDER CO CULTURE CONDITIONS MIMICKING OBESITY

PI: Dr. Pooja Pratheesh
Funding agency: Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, 2014
Amount: Rs. 1.74 lakhs
Status: Completed
Outcome: The role of selected micro-RNA’s in modulating inflammatory responses in obese conditions were evaluated in vitro. Results of this study were published in Biotechnology and Biocatalysis Journal and presented in two international conferences. The study results contributed, in part, to a PhD thesis.

ASSOCIATION OF MATERNAL PERIODONTITIS WITH PRETERM BIRTH AND LOW BIRTH WEIGHT- A MOLECULAR STUDY IN SOUTH INDIAN TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL

PI: Dr. Sam Vijay Kumar
Funding agency: Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, 2015
Amount: Rs. 1.90 lakhs
Status: Ongoing
Expected Outcome: Maternal periodontitis has been clinically shown to be associated with preterm delivery. However molecular studies correlating periodontitis (oralpathogens) and preterm delivery has not been shown. This project aims to provide an association between these two parameters.

DEVELOPMENT OF A NOVEL EGG SHELL BASED IN VITRO MODEL FOR CALCIUM MINERALIZATION

PI: Dr. Sam Vijay Kumar
Funding agency: Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, 2015
Amount: Rs. 1.96 lakhs
Status: Ongoing
Expected Outcome: The project has resulted in establishment of an in vitro model for calcium mineralization using avian egg shells. This has given rise to a Copyright by the investigator. A student enrichment in the form of research internship was part of the work.

TO EVALUATE THE POTENTIAL ANTICATARACTOGENIC EFFECT OF AN ETHANOLIC EXTRACT OF CORIANDER SATIVUM (CILANTRO) ON SELENITE-INDUCED CATARACT: IN AN IN VIVO WISTAR RAT LENSES

PI: Dr. Anitha T.S
Funding agency: Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, 2015
Amount: Rs. 1.27 lakhs
Status: Ongoing
Expected Outcome: Extract of C. sativum may delay the onset or progression of cataract in selenite-induced animal model through the attenuation of oxidative stress. The study will result in the development of novel topically applied ophthalmic drug to reverse cataract without any invasive procedure.

EXPRESSION PROFILE OF SELECTED MICRORNA'S IN SLEEP APNEA CASES-A PILOT STUDY

PI: Dr. Agiesh Kumar B
Funding agency: Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, 2018
Amount: Rs. 1.29 lakhs
Status: Ongoing
Expected Outcome: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is characterized by repetitive episodes of upper airway obstruction that occur during sleep, usually associated with a reduction in blood oxygen saturation. Recent reports have shown that microRNA expression pattern could reflect cellular identity, which led to microRNAs being used as powerful diagnostic biomarkers of cancer. Role of microRNAs regulating sleep apnea is not known. In this context, this project intend to study the expression levels of selected microRNA in sleep apnea cases. The microRNA signature levels in sleep apnea cases may provide the basis of sleep apneapathophysiology and its association with other metabolism.

CELL FREE CIRCULATING DNA, HISTONE AND CERAMIDE LEVELS IN DENGUE PATIENTS

PI: Dr. Agiesh Kumar B
Funding agency: Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, 2018
Amount: Rs. 1.66 lakhs
Status: Ongoing
Expected Outcome: Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral disease and is one of the leading public health problem of today, that has rapidly spread throughout the tropics, with local variations in risk influenced by rainfall, temperature and unplanned rapid urbanization. So far, there is no effective vaccine or antiviral drug against the disease. Although mortality can reach 10–20% of severe cases, early appropriate treatment can reduce it to less than 1%. Hence, research work on the development of new methodologies to serve as dengue severity markers is the need of the hour. In the present proposal, a retrospective study will be conducted to find out the levels of circulating DNA, histones and ceramides in order to find its efficacy for an early prediction of dengue severity.
